Press Release following Oct 28 Post Worker's Support Group Meeting

Some 35 supporters and local post workers attended the meeting at the Willesden Working Men's Club on October 28th.

The message was that, despite how this dispute is often portrayed in the media, it is not about postal workers resisting modernisation, but refusing to accept management diktat about their terms and conditions; in their determination to cut jobs, management have resorted to bullying and intimidation.

At Kilburn Delivery Office, the workforce was locked out for several days after a disagreement over health and safety. Elsewhere, people have not been paid because they have not been able to complete their delivery within their shift time, and people have had their job content and shift times changed at short notice with no consultation.

Too often, jobs have been cut before the machinery meant to make the flow of work more efficient has been brought in. Consequently, more workers than ever are off with stress. The increased workload on the others has meant deliveries in some parts of Willesden are only happening every other day. Far from modernising, Royal Mail management seem to want to turn the clock back to the days when industrial relations meant do as the boss says.

Many managers belong to the Communication Managers Association of Unite the union. A resolution condemning their behaviour towards CWU members in this dispute can be downloaded from the Brent TUC website. The meeting called on Unite to discipline those managers.

We believe large numbers of the public and other trades unionists support the postal workers in their efforts to defend their working conditions and to defend the postal service against its constant downgrading.

Everyone is encouraged to raise support for the postal workers in their trade union or other organisation. Postal workers representatives are willing to speak to other organisations to explain the issues behind the dispute. Supporters are encouraged to get their trade union to make a donation to the hardship fund and/or have a collection.

Up to date news, including details of Post Worker's Support Group Meetings can be found on the Brent TUC website, http://www.brenttuc.org.uk.There is also a collection sheet available on the website for donations to the hardship fund.

Forum: Brent TUC messages

Raising state pension age to 70 would put older people in workless limbo, says TUC

Responding to the Institute of Directors' (IOD) report on retirement published today (Monday), which calls for the state pension age to be raised to 70, TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said:

'The better off you are, the longer you live and the more years you get to claim a state pension. A big rise in the state pension age would mean the less well-off lose a much bigger proportion of their pension than longer-living affluent pensioners, who are much less dependent on the state pension in any case.

'With employers fighting hard to keep a retirement age of 65, such a proposal would condemn many older people to a limbo where they are too old to work and too young for a state pension.

'Taking from the poor to give to the rich is no way to reform the pensions system.

'The IOD report fails to address the platinum-plated pensions enjoyed by FTSE 100 directors, which pay out nearly 250,000 a year and are commonly available at 60.'

http://www.tuc.org.uk/pensions/tuc-17117-f0.cfm

Forum: Brent TUC messages

TUC boycott statement

Brendan Barber speech moving General Council statement on the Middle East
Introductory speech to the General Council statement at TUC Congress by TUC General Secretary. 17 September 2009
http://www.tuc.org.uk/congress/tuc-16992-f0.cfm

General Council statement on the Middle East
TUC Congress, Thursday 17 September 2009.
http://www.tuc.org.uk/congress/tuc-16991-f0.cfm

The TUC reiterates its belief that only when a sovereign, independent, democratic contiguous and viable Palestinian state is created, living side by side with a secure Israel will there be a chance for peace and stability in the Middle East.

We remain committed to a two-state solution to the crisis in the Middle East and support for the Road Map.

We recognize the enormous suffering of the Palestinian people, and we call upon the British Government to make appropriate representations to the international community to secure lasting peace through a negotiated settlement based on mutual respect and self-determination, on justice for the Palestinians and on security for Israel.

The TUC reiterates its condemnation of the Government of Israels offensive in Gaza which resulted in 1,450 Palestinian deaths and 5,000 injured, as well as the massive, systematic destruction of infrastructure.

We also reiterate our condemnation of the rocket attacks from inside Gaza against Israeli civilians.

We welcome the findings of the UN investigation which highlighted possible war crimes on both sides of the conflict. The TUC remains concerned about the situation in Gaza and reiterates its opposition to the Israeli blockade, which is in contravention of international law and prevents vital supplies from reaching the people of Gaza.

We welcome the contributions unions made earlier this year to the TUC Aid appeal for Gaza.

As a result of the Gaza offensive, the TUC calls on the British Government to:
(a)         condemn the Israeli military aggression and the continuing blockade of Gaza;
(b)         end arms sales to Israel which reached a value of 18.8 million in 2008, up from 7.7 million in 2007;
(c) seek EU agreement to impose a ban on the importing of goods produced in the illegal settlements; and
(d) support moves to suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement which provides preferential trade facilities to Israel.

The TUC reiterates our pledge to work in solidarity with the Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions (PGFTU) and urges unions to support financially the TUC/PGFTU projects funded through TUC Aid as well as the joint Histadrut-PGFTU projects being developed in several sectors under the auspices of Global Union Federations.

We welcome the resolution last year of the longstanding dispute over the remittance of membership subscriptions from the Histadrut to the PGFTU, which was brokered by the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), and support any stronger relations between the Histadrut and the PGFTU that they wish to develop.

The TUC condemns the Histadrut statement of 13 January 2009 which backed the attacks on Gaza and showed insufficient concern for the level of civilian casualties.

At the same time, we recognize the recent Histadrut resolution on peace and co-operation, welcomed by the ITUC, which calls on the Israeli government to make concessions and take courageous and concrete steps towards attaining peace. We will continue to press Histadrut to take a firmer line on these issues.

The General Council will raise Congress concerns with the Histadrut and report back to Congress on future relationships.

To increase the pressure for an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian Territories, and the removal of the separation wall and the illegal settlements, we will support a boycott (where trade union members should not put their own jobs at risk by refusing to deal with such products) of those goods and agricultural products that originate in illegal settlements - through developing an effective, targeted consumer-led boycott campaign working closely with the Palestine Solidarity Campaign - and campaign for disinvestment by companies associated with the occupation as well as engaged in building the separation wall.

In undertaking these actions each affiliate will operate within its own aims and objectives and within the law.
We reiterate our encouragement to unions to affiliate to the Palestine Solidarity Campaign and to raise greater awareness of the issues.

Forum: Brent TUC messages

Why I have a Free Software Foundation ad on this website

PC's can run Linux as well as Windows. Microsoft do not tell you this.

I have come, over the years, to resent Microsoft's dominance of the PC market. Microsoft have rejected perfectly reasonable open standards - such as open document format for documents in favour of complex proprietary standards.

It also goes off in its own direction hoping to attack other company's efforts, e.g. Microsoft Silverlight versus Adobe Flash, Microsoft F# (its own functional programming language) versus Haskell or Lisp. Flash runs in Linux and Windows. A very poor version of Silverlight has been produced by Microsoft and Novell for Linux, called Moonlight.

The Java debacle, where Microsoft was successfully sued by Sun for producing the abomination called Microsoft Visual Java (which only ran in Windows), led to Microsoft producing J# as a Visual Studio 2005 language and dropping it in Visual Studio 2008.

Compared with Mandriva Linux, Windows is incredibly slow and clunky. It is also expensive and does not support all the features of the mathematical software I need. Linux (and Unix) does.

Microsoft is far too large and too dominant. It needs to be cut down to size.

If corporations do not buy Windows 7 - coming out in October - that should give Microsoft food for thought.

I mainly use Mandriva Linux and only occasionally go into Windows. I have stuck with XP.

Forum: Brent TUC messages

Demos in Harrow on 11th September

The Stop the Islamification of Europe demonstration in Harrow was held on a Friday in Ramadan on 11th September.

It was intended to provoke and upset the Moslem community and it did so. It is not surprising and entirely reasonable that Moslems turned up in number to defend the Harrow Central Mosque from a posse of Islamophobic thugs.

The police had a duty to protect the few far-right protesters that did turn up.

However there was no excuse for attacking the police, they were only doing their job.

I would welcome responses to this.

See the Harrow Times Story

Forum: Brent TUC messages

Protest against Narendra Modi becoming FDI Asian perssonality of the year

http://www.petitiononline.com/FDI/

The petition reads

"To: Ms. Courtney Fingar, Editor, the FDI Magazine, The British High Commissioner
  Dear Madam,

It has been reported in the media that Mr. Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister of Gujarat (India), has been chosen for being conferred the 'FDI Asian Personality of the Year 2009' award by the FDI Magazine of the Financial Times (FT) group.

Your attention, in this context, needs be drawn to the fact that as the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Mr Modi, in February-March 2002, had presided over one of the worst communal carnages in post-Independence India. No less than the Indian Supreme Court, for that reason, had compared him with the Emperor Nero. And various international human rights organisations including the Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch held him directly responsible for the gory mob violence in which hundreds of Muslims were killed, looted and raped. Even the National Human Rights Commission of India, a government body, strongly castigated him. He is at the moment under investigation for his role by an investigation team specially constituted by the Supreme Court of India, as per its express directive.

Not only that, even today over a large number families of Internally Displaced Muslims, the victims of 2002 communal carnage, live in rehabilitation colonies built by NGOs as they have not been allowed to return to their villages by their tormentors enjoying state patronage.

Under the impact of consequent public outcry, the US government cancelled his visa in March 2005 and his planned trip to London, as recently as in May 2009, for the India Summit 2009 had to be dropped.

The reported decision to confer him with the award is highly disturbing, and also puzzling, in that specific context.

It must be pointed out that it would help to legitimise his political career and records symbolising and promoting the politics of sectarian hatred and violence of the worst kind.

In view of the above, you are urged to forthwith drop your reported plan to honour Mr. Modi for that would, in a way, make you complicit in his horrific crimes against humanity and irreparably damage your own credibility.

  Sincerely,"

Forum: Brent TUC messages

Universities and maths education

Having taught pure mathematics at university, including abstract algebra and mathematical logic, one realises that not all subjects taught in mathematics courses are useful in industry. The point of university mathematics courses is to teach students how to approach problems. I think that this is quite valuable in itself.

My main criticism, looking back on my own education, is that there was very little taught of the personalities that drove the evolution of mathematics into its present form. Marcus de Sautoy's programmes on Mathematics are at too low a technical level to substitute for the graft required to get a true understanding of this.

It would be nice if some more could be done to fit mathematics education into a historical context. A few words about Pythagoras, Euclid, Euler, Gauss, Newton, Leibnitz etc etc would have given me a rounded education.

Forum: Brent TUC messages

Petition for an apology to the famous computer scientist Alan Turing

http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/turing/

Alan Turing was the greatest computer scientist ever born in Britain. He laid the foundations of computing, helped break the Nazi Enigma code and told us how to tell whether a machine could think.

He was also gay. He was prosecuted for being gay, chemically castrated as a 'cure', and took his own life, aged 41.

The British Government should apologize to Alan Turing for his treatment and recognize that his work created much of the world we live in and saved us from Nazi Germany. And an apology would recognize the tragic consequences of prejudice that ended this man's life and career.

Forum: Brent TUC messages

The petition to stop the job cuts at EHRC is now live.

Visit http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/ehrchelpline/
to sign this petition.

Please forward to all your colleagues and encourage them to get involved in the campaign.

PCS members at the EHRC are fighting plans to cut 50 posts from its public helpline, and close the Manchester helpline altogether, where 36 highly trained staff are at risk of losing their jobs.

Helpline and knowledge staff would be reduced from 115 to 65 staff, with a planned restructure in Birmingham , Cardiff and Glasgow . All staff would have to compete for jobs - no-ones job would be safe.

The plan was kept secret from the union until a 90 statutory notice of formal redundancy consultation was served on the union on 12 February, the day after staff were informed. This was a bombshell.

Helpline workers are the lowest paid in the EHRC, but they provide an essential public service advising ordinary people of their rights if they are suffering from discrimination at work or in society.

Since the recession has deepened calls to the helpline have increased, particularly from workers facing redundancy because they are on maternity leave, are disabled, black or have caring responsibilities.

Voluntary advice bodies are already struggling to cope with increased demand as the recession bites, employment tribunal claims are rocketing and there is no legal aid available. The EHRC helpline is an essential public service.

The plans come at the same time as Harriet Harman urging women to seek advice on their employment rights, as well as James Purnell looking at whether minority groups are suffering disproportionately in the recession.

The EHRCs first response to the recession was to produce a pamphlet for small businesses on how to follow the right processes when making staff redundant. (But not how to retain them!)

In contrast, until recently the EHRC has refused to advertise its public helpline. A recent promotion on a small part of the service has shown call volumes triple, yet this has been ignored in the plans to cut the service.

Forum: Brent TUC messages

MP's get their comeuppance

First they voted for the war in Afghanistan causing untold suffering. However Labour got voted back in.

The they voted for the war in Iraq causing even more horror and suffering. Labour still got voted back in.

When voters found out that many MP's had cheated on their expenses they then got angry. Why was it this that made voters realise that many MP's have questionable integrity?

Forum: Brent TUC messages

Vote on June 4th in the Euro elections

I believe that a minority of MP's are guilty of what may turn out to be fraudulent expense claims. A claim for interest on a paid off mortgage looks like fraud, for instance. So does 'flipping'.

Time is needed for Parliament to put its house in order, and for the political system to adjust itself to the earthquake of the last week. A General Election now may not produce members that are any more honourable than those that they replace.

I believe that there are sufficient people of integrity to do this vital work, but it will take time.

However political parties have to get in a lot of money just to fight elections. They do not have the resources to look into whether any of their prospective parliamentary candidates (PPC) has ever fiddled an expense claim.

However PPC's know that MP's must, from now on, be like Caesar's wife when claiming expenses. That is not a bad thing.

Also, MP's who have fiddled their expense claims will not fight the next election. That, too, is a victory.

What is worrying is that voters may well be put off voting in the European elections which, under the proportional system, could well mean lucrative European Parliament seats for the BNP. This will put thousands into their party funds.

It is safe to vote for the big political parties. Don't listen to Norman Tebbitt. Please come out and vote on June 4th for a mainstream political party.

Forum: Brent TUC messages

Brent Police take on additional stop and search powers

From: Simon.Corkill@met.police.uk
Sent: 28 April 2009 17:13
Subject: Community notification of authorisation of temporary additional stop and search powers

Re: Community notification of authorisation of temporary additional stop and search powers

Dear community contact

I write to update you on an additional short term stop and search power that has been authorised in the borough and to ask for any feedback you have in relation to this or community feedback you hear in the next few days. Please feel free to forward this notification and contact me if you have or any feedback about stop and search.

What is this stop and search power?

An additional power of stop and search for officers in Brent has been authorised. This is called section 60. This power means that a constable in uniform can stop and search if the authorising officer (normally a Superintendent) believes that incidents involving serious violence may take place in any locality in the officers police area and it is expedient to use the powers to prevent their occurrence or that persons are carrying dangerous instruments or offensive weapons.

Why have the police authorised the power?

To protect the community and prevent violence. Following a serious disturbance at Copland school yesterday. There were a total of 22 calls between 1622 and 1725 which referred to a large group of approx 30 young people armed with baseball bats, hammers and bottles fighting and running in the area. The description suggests that the fight was mainly involving Asian and dual heritage youths. Those involved were seen to run towards Wembley Stadium.

A section 60 authorisation (power to stop and search without specific grounds) has been put in place from 2pm today. It covers Wembley High rd j/w St Johns Rd incorporating Park Lane into Wembley Park Drive j/w Empire Way j/w Engineers Way into 5th Way continuing to 4th Way. Southway j/w Wembley Hill Rd past triangle into Harrow Rd j/w Jesmond Ave incorporating Jesmond Ave to bottom of school playing fields running into London Rd joining St Johns Rd.

The authorisation is reviewed everyday and we will send an e-mail when the power ceases.

Any community feedback would be very useful.

Simon Corkill

Partnership Superintendent

Brent Borough

MetPhone:43277| Telephone: 020 8733 3277| Fax: 020 8733 3101

Address: Room 304, Sudbury House, Wembley Police Station, 603 Harrow Road, Wembley HA0 2HH

Web: http://www.met.police.uk/brent

NOT PROTECTIVELY MARKED

************************************************** ********************
It is the policy of the MPS that:

MPS personnel (or agents working on behalf of the MPS) must not use
MPS systems to author, transmit or store documents such as electronic mail (e-mail) messages or attachments:

* containing racist, homophobic, sexist, defamatory, offensive, illegal or
otherwise inappropriate material;

.* containing material requiring a protective marking higher than
RESTRICTED, (and not higher than NOT PROTECTIVELY MARKED across
the internet) without the use of approved encryption;

* containing personal data for use other than in accordance with
the notification(s) under the Data Protection Act, 1998 of the
system(s) from which the data originates.

* This Email message has been scanned for viruses and contents.

************************************************** ********************

Forum: Brent TUC messages
