Some 35 supporters and local post workers attended the meeting at the Willesden Working Men's Club on October 28th.

The message was that, despite how this dispute is often portrayed in the media, it is not about postal workers resisting “modernisation”, but refusing to accept management diktat about their terms and conditions; in their determination to cut jobs, management have resorted to bullying and intimidation.

At Kilburn Delivery Office, the workforce was locked out for several days after a disagreement over health and safety. Elsewhere, people have not been paid because they have not been able to complete their delivery within their shift time, and people have had their job content and shift times changed at short notice with no consultation.

Too often, jobs have been cut before the machinery meant to make the flow of work more efficient has been brought in.  Consequently, more workers than ever are off with stress. The increased workload on the others has meant deliveries in some  parts of Willesden are only happening every other day. Far from “modernising”, Royal Mail management seem to want to turn the clock back to the days when industrial relations meant “do as the boss says”.

Many managers belong to the Communication Managers Association of Unite the union. A resolution condemning their behaviour towards CWU members in this dispute can be downloaded from the Brent TUC website. The meeting called on Unite to discipline those managers.

We believe large numbers of the public and other trades unionists support the postal workers in their efforts to defend their working conditions and to defend the postal service against its constant downgrading.

Everyone is encouraged to raise support for the postal workers in their trade union or other organisation. Postal workers representatives are willing to speak to other organisations to explain the issues behind the dispute. Supporters are encouraged to get their trade union to make a donation to the hardship fund and/or have a collection.

Up to date news, including details of Post Worker's Support Group Meetings can be found on the Brent TUC website, http://www.brenttuc.org.uk.There is also a collection sheet available on the website for donations to the hardship fund.
